Brazilian students to compete in first-ever scholarship competition to study in Sweden

The scholarship competition is well-timed with the recent strengthening of ties between Sweden and Brazil as "triple helix partners" in the industrial, governmental and academic fields. The competition also highlights Sweden's position as a forerunner in innovation.

Head of Communications and International Relations, CISB, Analice Martins, said: "There is a lot of talk about innovation through international collaboration, but sometimes those concepts get stuck at the theoretical level. This is a concrete opportunity to connect talents and efforts from both countries."

The Sweden-Brazil Scholarship Competition 2013 aims to attract recent graduates in engineering and technology-related fields as part of the Swedish-Brazilian partnership. This is also the first-ever scholarship competition where Brazilian engineering students and young professionals can win scholarships to study in Sweden and get to intern at CISB's partner companies, Saab and Stora Enso.

The competition requires participants to answer with a series of questions and a case revolving around innovation, technology and sustainable development. Such competition formats have been carried out in China, India and the U.S., and are valued for creative approaches to existing selection processes due to higher involvement of applicants, thereby opening up a new dimension in screening and recruitment.

"What's interesting about competitions like this is that we propose a challenge and challenges inspire and trigger more involvement than a traditional application," said Niklas Jungegård, CEO of Student Competitions and co-organizer of the competition. Value is also created for all applicants when they are able to highlight the competition in their curriculum vitae, boosting their future employment chances.

Future editions of the project may be launched to increase the scale of the competition. "We want to involve more Brazilian and Swedish companies in it, as well as the authorities from both countries," said Jungegård. A partnership may also be made between the organizers and the Brazilian government's "Science Without Borders" program to offer and partially-finance scholarships for students pursuing undergraduate and graduate studies overseas.
